100 Feet Away

(Luther Monday)
100 FEET AWAY __ __ _
Of her compulsions, the one that drove him off eventually was that she was prone to fits of jealous rage. _
She made him bring along a beeper she buzzed it constantly- ironically; her middle name is “Page”. _
She’s got problems; she refers to them as issues- and one’s the court that pushed her to the fray __ _
and she tries to write him letters but she uses her computer _
when she prints them out, the words appear too sterile to convey _
the way it feels to know that she must keep her love at least 100 feet away __ _
She said she’s sorry ‘bout the flesh wound and brandishing that weapon on that day __ _
And she tries to run to tell him and there’s nothing there to stop her _
save a little piece of paper and the words typed on it say _
in the state of California she must keep her love at least 100 feet away. __ _
He told their therapist that even when she had a grip, she had that distant twinkle in her eyes. _
That twinkle it was just a pilot light; it stood for an inferno he would learn to recognize. _
Even the doctor could not convince her a little medication might make things okay _
And she’s sticking to her story because she really believes that _
It’s the world that’s going crazy; for the rest of us she’ll pray _
But she believes that she’s in love and she believes love’s just 100 feet away. –Luther Monday _
